Sherman

Sherman. . .Historic New England On the Shore Of Candiewood Lake

The Community
Situated in the foothills of the Berkshires, Sherman's picturesque rural New England
ambiance seems untouched by the many years that have passed since Roger
Sherman, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, lived and worked
as a shoemaker there, in what was then called New Fairfield. Still, heavily wooded
ridges separated by historic farms run parallel courses through the 23.6 square
miles of the long and narrow town. Many old stone walls attest to the agrarian past
of this richly historic location; it is a peaceful retreat where the Appalachian Trail,
an ancient native American walking path, is still in evidence today One of
Connecticut's most sparsely settled areas, Sherman's approximately 3 ,000 residents
enjoy the unhurried pace of this quaint haven, where the town center consists of a
library, post office, a few stores and the Sherman Players' Playhouse. Residents
occupy an attractive blend of homes ranging from 200-year-old farmhouses to new
custom-built classics. Candlewood Lake borders the southeastern portion of
Sherman, attracting a seasonal population to its summer cottages and vacation
residences. The town has a Town Meeting/Board of Selectmen form of government.
Educational and Cultural Facilities
Sherman's school system consists of The Sherman School, a K-8 facility. Sherman
students have the option to attend high school in either Brookfield, New Fairfield
or New Milford. The town has attracted a year-round creative population of
writers, artists and theatrical people, whose participation in the town's Playhouse
enriches the cultural life of the area.
Recreational Facilities
From the aquatic attractions and public town beaches of Candlewood Lake and
Lake Waramaug, to the civilized pleasures of the library, shopping, theater group
and Playhouse, Sherman offers an interesting variety of recreational pursuits. Youth
sports and community activities abound.
Transportation
Bordering New York State on its entire western boundary, Sherman rests 20 miles
from Danbury and 75 miles from New York City. Commuter trains and buses are
available from Danbury and State Route 37 connects Sherman to major highways.
